Peter Richardson (PeterR) will head this group which intends to expand the skill of those interested in landscape photography. Group meetings will include discussion and occasional field trips.

Trip to Nash Point - Friday 21st September

Postby peterr » Wed Aug 29, 2018 8:09 pm

I am proposing a trip to Nash Point on the Glamorgan coast on Friday 21st September.

Lighthouse and spectacular coastline - quite a popular location for landscape photographers.

High tide is at around 5:45 p.m. and sunset 7:15 p.m. (for those who feel inclined to stay and hope for a golden hour).

We will depart from Malvern at 9a.m. and return late afternoon / early evening.

I would like to attend providing it's not tipping it down with rain that day :-)

Unfortunately, it's not a day when I am free.

It looks like there might be seven of us, so we we will go ahead. The forecast is actually looking quite good at the moment - dry with sunshine, but temperature a bit on the low side.

1) Getting there - logistics: We will meet at the Splash car park at 0900 on Friday morning. We will probably need two cars. I am happy to take mine, so we will need one more driver. If you intend to make your own way there, then please let me know if you haven't done so already. For those making there own way, we will meet at the Nash Point car park which is near the cafe at 11:45 (assuming no major hold ups on the way there).

2) Photography equipment: I recommend bringing a tripod if you have one. ND filters - graduated and 5-10 stoppers should also prove useful. In terms of lenses, I would recommend wideangle (focal length 20-35mm full frame, 12-24mm APSC, 10-20mm micro 4/3rds).

3) Lunch: Having looked at reviews on the internet, it seems that the cafe isn't always open on weekdays. I therefore recommend bringing a packed lunch.

4) If there is anyone else who is interested, then it's not too late to 'sign up'. Please register interest on this thread.

5) We will cancel in the event of heavy rain forecast for all day. Keep a watch on the club calendar and/or this thread if the forecast does change for the worse.

Understood.
Could you precise what you call the Splash car park?
I can also drive if necessary.

Thanks Jacques. The Splash car park is in Priory Road Malvern and is located opposite "The Splash" swiming pool. There is a small car park and a larger one. We will be in the larger one. There is a charge for parking there. I can't remember what it is for a day, but I don't think it is too excessive.

Latest forecast for South Wales on Friday is for strong winds (40-50mph) and blustery showers.

And my wife assures me that the cafe is open - if we do need to take refuge.

There is the possibility of moving on to Dunraven bay in the afternoon - which also looks to be a very photogenic location.

Well no refuge and some of the most challenging conditions I have photographed in. Driving rain, torrential at times, just occasionally interrupted by a few seconds of sunshine. The very strong winds were interlaced with gusts that had three out of five of us quite literally blown off our feet. Most places by the seafront seemed to have closed down for the day. Thank goodness the pub in Llantwit Major was open.

Meanwhile, just 3.5 miles up the coast at Dunraven Bay .... one of the aptly named "Dunraven Lunatics"! Ah, sunny Wales!!

Peter, thanks for organising this - I look forward to seeing more photos from Nash Point.
